Homer is best known as the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey. He was believed by the ancient Greeks to have been the first and greatest of the epic poets. Author of Europe’s first known literature, he is central to the Western canon. Iliad and the Odyssey are the two oldest surviving examples of Greek literature, epic poems describing the Trojan War, a conflict between the Greeks and the city of Troy, which the epics say was fought nearly 1200 years before the Common Era. The Trojan War was fought around Helena, who, according to legend, was the beautiful daughter of Zeus and the wife of the king of the Greek polis of Sparta.
